“Awarded Purple Heart” -
Naugatuck - Harry E. Stewart, 87, of Naugatuck, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2010 at Waterbury Hospital.
The son of the late Harry and Julia (Southard) Stewart, Harry was born May 5, 1922 in Waterbury, CT. He was the loving husband of the late Edna F. (Yocius) Stewart and the loving father of his dear daughter the late Nancy Stewart.
He attended local schools and became a Toolmaker. He worked at Bristol Company and Platt Brothers. He also worked at Dorset Rex for 22 years and Metal Fabricators for 23 years, retiring in 1986.
Harry was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the 63rd Division Recon as a Technical Sergeant Radio operator from 1942-1946. He fought in France and crossed the Rhine into Germany where he was wounded at the Siegfried Line on St. Paddy’s Day in 1944. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was past commander of the American Legion, Post #17, Naugatuck, CT.
Harry was a kind and caring man and was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed sing with family and friends and sharing memories with them, and he was a great storyteller who never forgot anything. He enjoyed cooking and good food, and watching the NY Yankees and the NY Giants. He will be greatly missed and remembered forever.
Harry leaves two brothers, Raymond Stewart and his wife Bernie of Lisbon Falls, ME, and David Stewart of Prospect, CT. Harry also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides his wife and daughter, he was predeceased by brothers, Clifford Stewart and Carl Stewart; sisters, Virginia (Stewart) Buckingham, Gladys Stewart, and Effa (Stewart) Zinko.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 30 at 11am at Prospect Congregational Church, 25 Center Street, Prospect.
