Obituary
Southbury – Mr. Robert Vensel, Sr., 86, of Elaine Drive, Southbury, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Irene E. (Vimer) Vensel.
Mr. Vensel was born in Waterbury on March 8, 1923, a son of the late Mortimer Vensel Sr. and Josephine (Daly) Vensel. He was a graduate of Crosby High School and attended UConn. He was a proud veteran of the Navy serving during World War II in the South Pacific and served as commander of the David S. Miles American Legion Post 174 in Oxford. He was a longtime Southbury resident. He retired from Klarides Supermarket in Seymour where he worked as a meat cutter; as well as owner of Oxford Frozen Foods. His hobbies included fishing and hunting; and membership in the Woodbury/Southbury Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Besides his wife Irene of 57 years, he leaves two sons, Robert Vensel Jr. and wife Bonnie of Fremont, NH, Raymond Vensel and wife Janice of Oakland, ME; a brother, Donald Vensel Sr. of Waterbury; a sister, Catherine Manke of Waterbury; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Joanne Lewis; four brothers, Fred and Carl Vensel, Mortimer Vensel, Jr., and Frank Vensel, Sr.; two sisters, Mildred Book and Doris O’Dea are deceased.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 26 at 10am the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main Street, Naugatuck with Pastor Scott Nessel officiating. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8pm. Burial will be at the family’s convenience.
