Obituary
Naugatuck – Walter C. Krzykoski, 92, of 321 City Hill Street, Naugatuck, passed away peacefully Friday, February 5, 2010. He died as he had hoped he would, just outside the door of his home he had built in 1948, after a short walk outside. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Genevieve, to whom he attributed all of his major life’s accomplishments; his daughter, Anita; and son-in-law, David Johnson. He was predeceased by his daughter, Susan, as well as three brothers and two sisters. He was a World War II veteran.
Walter was a creative character, with a passion for truth. He was politically active in Naugatuck for his entire life, always looking for solutions for the greater good. His most recent passion was vaporizing garbage, as he fervently believed that this was a practical solution to some of the planet’s biggest issues. He was a “green” proponent long before the movement was popular. He also enjoyed “google-ing” the subject on the internet, which he often referred to as “an elderly person’s best friend”.
In the 1970’s, Walter was a very vocal proponent of pension reform, and felt that one of his greatest life accomplishments was speaking before the 93rd Congressional Hearings on pension reform in 1973, hearings which ultimately led to pension protection legislation.
Walter was a generous man and found great satisfaction for many years watching little league baseball games being played on the Union City fields built on land he donated.
Walter loved working in his yard, and was fortunate to be able to do so for his entire life. He used his property to express his creativity and ingenuity. As an example, when traditional methods of cutting trees became too difficult for his 90+ year old body, he’d find inventive ways of getting the job done – instead of using a bow saw, he’d simply and methodically drill a series of holes around the tree trunk to fell the tree.
Walter loved quotations. He found profound wisdom in succinct sayings. Among his favorites – “You can never bury the truth” and “A person is only as good as his word”. Walter will be missed.
In respect for Walter’s wishes, there will be no services. In remembrance of his late daughter, Susan, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Avenue, Meriden, CT 06450. The Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main Street, Naugatuck has been entrusted with his arrangements.
